It seems to me that we too easily forget that many young children's preferred mode of learning is active/physical involvement. Many are turned off by work-sheets and sitting still, but they are turned on by being physically involved in learning. Howard Gardner, in his theory of multiple intelligences, endorses our encouragement and use of bodily and kinaesthetic intelligence in the learning process. I am reminded of a child who was confined to a wheelchair and asking, "how will she ever learn about prepositions?" and the advice was to get her out of the chair if necessary and pull-push or somehow get her body over, under, through and between. We did it and it worked!

Rae Pica in her wonderful new book Jump Into Literacy taps into the same ideas, empowering the kinaesthetic learners and adding fun to literacy learning for every child. She reminds us that we remember best when we add physical involvement and we know that music and movement also aids memory. Rae Pica brings all these delights together into her book, some familiar ideas and some new ideas, but all involving movement. She encourages us to build a strong foundation of listening, then speaking, she adds ways to encourage reading and then writing. The book is based on sound research, is inviting, encouraging and creative. Let's jump to it!

Recommended.
