REGGIO EMILIA PRINCIPLES AND THE EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK (EYLF)

September 2011

Dear Early Childhood Practitioner

Welcome to our FREE e-newsletter, Early Childhood Notes.

Reggio Emilia principles complement and support the Early Years Learning Framework (DEEWR, 2009) through their many shared values and aspirations. A focal point of the philosophy of Reggio Emilia is the 'image of the child'. This image depicts a child who has rights as a citizen, is seen as competent, resourceful, and as a constructor and co-constructor of knowledge. This image of the child encourages us to ask how we, as educators, view the children in our care. What are our hopes and expectations? How are these hopes and expectations influenced by the image of and value our society attributes to young children? Do our own prejudices affect our expectation of children? How does our understanding of how children learn influence the provisions we make for meaningful learning experiences? The EYLF supports the goal that all young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. In her article in this e-newsletter, Jan Millikan reflects further on the relationship between Reggio Emilia principles and the EYLF.
